## Summary

Neural density estimators trained on simulator runs return a posterior over a simulator's parameters given observed data, calibrating agent-based and economic models whose likelihoods cannot be computed.

## Mechanism

Draw parameters theta from a prior, run the simulator to get outputs x, and train a conditional density estimator, usually a normalizing flow, to approximate p(theta | x) from the (theta, x) pairs (neural posterior estimation). Conditioning on observed data x_o gives the posterior; sequential variants such as APT draw new simulations from proposals concentrated near x_o. Related variants learn the likelihood or a likelihood ratio instead. Summary statistics can be hand-chosen or learned, for example with a temporal graph neural network over agent-level microstates. The method needs only forward runs, no likelihood and no gradients, and once trained it is amortized: a new observation gets its posterior in one forward pass.

## Limitations

- Needs many simulator runs, from thousands to hundreds of thousands depending on method and dimensionality, which is costly for slow, full-scale game simulations.
- A misspecified simulator yields confident posteriors over wrong parameters; calibration fits the data and does not validate the model.
- Posterior quality depends on the summary statistics or learned embeddings of noisy, high-dimensional outputs.
- Matching real data or telemetry targets does not make a mechanic fun; it only removes guesswork about parameter values.
- No game studio use was found in this run's sources.

- [Contagion](../mechanic/contagion.md) (Tunes / balances): Transmission, recovery and contact parameters can be inferred from real outbreak curves or target curves, with a posterior that shows which parameters the data cannot pin down.

- [Traffic congestion](../mechanic/traffic-congestion.md) (Tunes / balances): Demand and route-choice parameters of an agent-based traffic model can be fitted to observed counts, the same likelihood-free ABM calibration applied to a city.
- [Attribute-driven match engine](../mechanic/attribute-match-engine.md) (Tunes / balances): Match-engine parameters can be fitted so simulated score and statistic distributions match real league data, with uncertainty on each parameter.
- [Food web](../mechanic/food-web.md) (Tunes / balances): Predator-prey rates can be inferred from target population time series, so designers state desired oscillations and the posterior returns rates that produce them.
- [Adaptive threat scaling](../mechanic/adaptive-threat-scaling.md) (Tunes / balances): Treating target survival-time or loss-rate distributions from playtest telemetry as the observation, the posterior gives scaling parameters that reproduce them and how sensitive each one is.
